Time to pass smog, and it's likely that my Cat's bad.

Anyone used a 'univeral fit' converter and attached the OE flanges? it's $60 for a universal, and $200+ for a OE fit.. Might offset the cost of my MIG welder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

thoughts?
 
I have a 'universal' cat on my 'B. However, it's not attached to the manifold flange. Instead, mine is attached to the end of a 'down pipe' that places the cat under the car. The muffler shop I took my car to (Morse Muffler's in Burbank, CA) welded the cat to the end of the down pipe. The down pipe was already on the car when I got it.

If you want to attach a universal to the manifold in the stock location, then you may have to cut the flange off of the old cat and weld it onto the end of the new cat. I'm not sure if there's any differences in how hot a 'universal' gets versus a stock replacement, but I'd make sure it'll fit in the location your looking to put it before cutting or welding anything.
