Since I purchased my TR6, it has had a very squeaky steering wheel! Today I finally pulled off steering wheel and was expecting to tear it down to the bushing. To my amazement I turned the wheel and no squeak. The brush assembly was damaged on end which contacts circle ring, thus I was getting a bad squeal from this. I then lapped the offending end flat and used diamond paste to polish button end. This stopped the squeal and the odd looks from my passengers!

Yes, those often squeek (similar arrangements on many other cars do, too, my girlfriend's Pontiac Grand Am for one).
Your polishing job probably fixed it right up, but the noise might come back. Try squirting just a little spray lube in there occasionally, to keep it in good conditioni and prevent squeeking. WD40 and similar might work. I use "Color TV Tuner Cleaner and Lubricant", which can be found at Radio Shack. It works well and is specially made for electrical contacts.
