I'm pretty sure Emma's leaking oil from these 2 covers on the side there below where the manifold goes. Is that just a matter of replacing gaskets?

Re: Carstuff--engines

Should be, though you might want to wash the one with the breater tube in carb cleaner to make sure it's not plugged up.

Re: Carstuff--engines

I'm going to try out the parts washer!

Re: Carstuff--engines

for what it's worth, I'd pick up the silicon gasket set for the valve cover. The silicon gasket sets typically include silicon gaskets for those side covers. Moss has them, or if you want to save a bit of money you can get them on eBay. The set I have works great, plus their reuseable, so you don't have to get a new gasket evertime you pull off one of those or the valve cover.

just my $0.02 worth /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Carstuff--engines

Janel,

Moss has new silicone gaskets especially designed for the side covers. I hear they work pretty good. Just be careful, when you do replace the side covers that you don't over torque them as it can cause them to distort and REALLY leak. As I recall the spec is 4 ftlbs.

Re: Carstuff--engines

I have the silicone gaskets already.

I'm using an angle grinder to clean that area up. Chuck's dang air compressor can't keep up. I get less than 30 seconds and it slows and the a/c has to recover, takes about 3 minutes.

Dahubby's birthday is Saturday. He's getting a new air compressor (has been wanting one anyway) I want one of those standing ones. What should I look for, how big?

Re: Carstuff--engines

Don't use angle grinder to clean up anything on the engine that's a machined surface!! If anything, get a thin putty knife & scrape & scrape & scrape...keep that angle grinder away from the engine, Janel!

Re: Carstuff--engines

With an air compressor, I always suggest, buy as big as you can afford. You'll always want bigger / more air!

Re: Carstuff--engines

Well, it doesn't look like you hurt the machined edges...you'll know though as soon as the oil gets up there...

Re: Carstuff--engines

Ha! Ye of little faith. I was VERY careful. Ya'll gotta give me a little credit here, I'm not just a pretty pair of gold stilletos.

Re: Carstuff--engines

Note to self:

Buy Wife a pretty pair of stilletos /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Carstuff--engines

Well, I'm almost 60 - to keep me from having a heart attack, please keep that angle grinder away from your engines....hehehehe

Re: Carstuff--engines

So I shouldn't be using the wire wheel and the bench grinder on those covers either?
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Carstuff--engines

Wire wheel is okay - go to harbor freight & get an assortment of their plastic wheels - if you use hard wire, you'll scratch the metal & then have to sand it to smooth.

Re: Carstuff--engines

I read about a trick for cleaning the gunk out of the side covers: pour a little bit of gasoline into the cover and light it up. When it quits burning, beat the cover against something to knock the burned up crud out.

Replacing the inner mesh can be done using a pot/grill cleaner steel mesh pad or two. Ask JDW about it...

Re: Carstuff--engines

Josh - I started to tell her about that but had second thoughts - Janell & fire??? In a closed garage? Inside the city limits?

Re: Carstuff--engines

But Officer I was just cleaning my hooters,,,,,,er engine. Well there are two side covers, tapet covers, tapet chest covers,,, oh well.

Re: Carstuff--engines

Ya, was thinking about that when I was using the parts washer and smoking.

KIDDING!

OOOH, and I sawsalled yesterday! Cut up Emma's exhaust pipes to fit in the trash.
