Looking for recommendations, caveats, experiences, etc.

I'd like to put a carport over the house-end of the driveway, so I have a shaded outdoor place by my workshop to work on the cars. Something like:

Other than snow weight and construction, what other things should I worry about? Already have a nice gravel (pea-stone) driveway and parking area, but sure can't afford a Garage-Mahal!

I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts and personal experiences.

They sell alot of these here in the south. They are not the heaviest of duty but will keep your vehicle out of the sun/rain. Concerns would be snow load, wind, and ability to tie down somehow. Usually they bolt down to a slab. Around here a 2 car is $799-999 installed
 
Here's what I did to add a carport to the end of my garage:

It was part of a larger addition but by itself not very expensive....& I guarantee you can build one like it for less than the $650-$750 they charge for the 'ugly metal ones' (sorry, just my opinion). And I think it fits the front of the garage & with the large trees around it, it blends in more than stands out.

Mine is also on gravel. These types of covers legs are attached to a continuious metal base angle. What I did to tie it down was, like a fence post, dig a hole, fill with concret, insert a J bolt, drill hole in angle and when concrete is set, bolt the down.

I think it will handle a moderate snow load (check spec's from manufacturer), but wind is a problem if not bolted down. 15-20 mph wind and you've got LIFTOFF!

Some are available with sides and end covers.

You could also add gutters/down spouts to stop splashing into your work area.
