Did the 280i have padding under the carpet. My carpet has been replaced by old owner so I don't know if it should be there or not. I am redoing my carpet and I don't want to put it back. Any thoughts?

Yes, the original backing was what I call horsehair......it's prone to absorbing water. When I redid my 280i, we used the Dynamat-type insulation which is just far better all the way around.

I am thinking about going back without one. The old foam mat was full of water and mold. I guess it's just there for sound.

That's why I went with what I did. The old style insulation had absorbed water and rotted out my seat tracks during the years it was stored. With the Dynamat-style insulation, it won't do that, plus it provides good sound deadening as well as insulating against heat in the cockpit.
