When I bought my BJ8, the carbs were tuned well. Then, a friend gave me the name of tuning specialist. So, I called him in for a spring tune up. He took the SU carbs apart, showed me how much he know, yada, yada, put them back together and, tada, now I have nothing but problems. Cold start problems, backfiring, post ignition run on. He's been back 4 times now (and charges me each time) to fix the problems. He talked the whole time, telling me it could be one thing or another. I'm sucking gas like it's water, with plenty of black coming out the exhaust. Too rich, I say, and he tells me that he can't lean it out any more than he already has, and can't figure out why it won't get leaner. Scratching his head all day long.

Is there anyone on Long Island who can make my carbs work? This is just crazy, and before you say it Keoke, I know nothing about carbs so don't start throwing a bunch of carb words at me like I have a clue what you're talking about. We played with the little screws on the carbs, in and out, in and out. You'd think we'd have baby carbs already with all the in and out. And the only thing I'd like to choke is this "specialist". I need someone who can just make this right.
 
Is there oil in the pots?
Is the needles set flush?
Is the chokes centered?
Is the float level set correct?

If there is anyone who can straighten out your carbs I suggest Joe. At least he is in the approximate vicinity & has a top notch reputation with the carbs.

Just called Joe. Very helpful. Weird part is that he knows the guy who was doing my work. Anyway, his mechanic is on vacation, so he referred me to another guy closer to where I live who can take the car in on Monday. That's exactly what I needed. Thanks.
 
I have seen more carb problems that were the result of "fiddlers" than anything wrong with the carbs. They generally need to be set once and left alone (that's the hard part).

I hope they get set right. Good luck.

Before you set the carbs make sure the ignition system is set correct - point gap, plug gap, timing. If these are off it will through the carbs off as well, and you'll end up chasing your tail. Remember - assume nothing, check everything.

Thanks bob. That's exactly what I plan to do. Just work through the system to the carbs.
 
Just wanted to let everyone know that Joe Curto worked my BJ8 yesterday. The car has never driven as well as when I got it back. A few hours and he had the whole situation straightened out, all problem fixed and the car humming. And, Joe's a great guy. Threw in a Joe Curto SU Carb coffee mug to boot.

If anybody is stymied by what to do with their carbs, I highly recommend Joe. It was a great experience working with him and an absolute pleasure to drive the car home running like new.

I’ve read it here many times: one of the nice things about owning a LBC is the people that you meet. We can’t all do everything necessary to keep these cars running so sooner or later we have to reach out to someone for help. I was in to see Joe about three weeks ago and we talked for about an hour about music, cars, and whatever while he put the finishing touches on my rebuilt HD8’s. When you find some as helpful and knowledgeable as Joe, it’s almost a pleasure to give the man your money!
