Should have used a proof-reader. This sign (photo shot by a friend) could be found to all the entry points of the engine room of a ferry to Vancouver Island (Canada). True, carbon dioxide can kill you, if in high enough concentrations. :p

It looks like two different signs... appears that the carbon dioxide sign was placed in close proximity to the "hearing sign".
 
In the event of a fire on a boat, there is a procedure to flood compartments that may be on fire with Carbon Dioxide to smother any flames. Entering such a compartment without breathing apparatus would be fatal. That would also tie in to having an alarm go off.
