Carb Tools

I found a carb tool kit in the spare tire compartment. I read the directions and it says I can replace the dampeners with the tubes and rods in the kit. When the carbs are in sync then the two rods are at the same height. This is instead of the vacume guage. This sounds OK to me, any comments?

Bruce, you can do essentially the same thing by watching the pistons through the carb throats.
The UniSyn would be more precise, I would think, but the tubes and rods should work OK for normal circumstances.
I haven't seen one of those tool sets in years! I always thought they were for Strombergs, though.

I use a piece of heater hose. Hold it in front of each carb alternatly and adjust the idle screws till the sound is the same on each.

The infamous "Listenin' Pipe" method!

I've a couple sets of those tools, and the best bit in them for me is the jet centering "anvil". I can turn the jet adjusters with two fingers most times. They (the tools) were for SU's but can be used on Strombergs too. More trouble than they're worth tho: as Jeff said, just observe the pistons as throttle is applied and you can see the same thing... and it's mostly a function of linkage adjustment to sync the piston lift. UniSyn is primarily throttle plate sync; fine (idle) adjustment. Another really handy gadget is a ~pair~ of the ColorTune tools.

Aloha Bruce,

I've used that SU tool kit for several years, about 30 years now. The rods and wire let you observe the rise of the dash pots, so if they move in unison they are taking in equal amounts of air. The rods also are a gage to set the float bowel lever to the correct cap. The jet wrench is handy. The last piece is a jet centering guide. This replaces the jet needle in the dash pot and centers the jet assembly in the carb body when it is installed. The needle will bind in the jet if you use this tool during a rebuild. Moss Motors and J C Whitney still sell this tool kit.

Safety Fast,
Dave
