3 questions:
1) There is a slight side to side movement in the throttle shafts thru carb bodies. Both carbs. How much trouble am I in?
2) Am I playing the foolish shortcut game if I don't replace the jet bearing kit while I have everything apart?
3) On carbs of this vintage am I being pound foolish if I don't pay the pro's to do the rebuild for me? If so, who do I go to? I guess that's 4 questions.
 
Sorry to be slow but I expected someone with more experience on your particular carb to reply. Anyway, here is general info on SU carbs.
1) The shafts usually wear which causes an air leak. You will never get them tuned properly until you fix that problem.
2) Depends on condition. The cost for those parts is not great and you will likely find at least some of them in not so good condition. By the time you tear them down that far it would seem reasonable to replace.
3) It can certainly be done by a reasonably accomplished DIYer but if you prefec a pro, Joe Curto is the guy. IF you do it yourself, do one at a time or at least be very careful to keep all the parts for each carb together, especially the piston and chamber.
