does anyone know the difference between the Moss master, moss regular and VB rebuild kits - have to rebuild the carbs on my TR3 and the kits are $150, $120 and $40 respectively (add another $13 for VB for the metering needle) - advice would be appreciated, thanks,

This spring I rebuilt my carbs with the cheaper Moss kit. They claim it has the diaphragms and I was dissapointed to find the backfire diaphragms were not included. I had to order them after receiving the kit and it delayed getting my car running, besides the extra shipping charge. I felt a better description of the contents would have been appreciated.

I also ordered a kit from TRF and they assured me the diaphragms were included. The proplem here was that they were back ordered and by the time they were ready to ship I had my car running. I like TRF parts but nothing is sacred when it comes to having my car running.

If I'm not mistaken, Moss identifies in the listing what components go with each kit. With the TR6 kit, I remember them marking the individual listed items with symbols representing each kit. I'm sure would do the same for the 3.

Yes it does list under the master kit something like genuine parts and everything you need, but doesn't state the difference between the master and the standard (even if you go through and search the notes) - basically, i'd just like advice if it worth spending three times as much on a moss kit vs. VB,

Thx,

Kerry,

I bought mine locally but I would call the toll free number or e-mail Moss directly and ask them what the difference is between the two kits.

The first time I did my carbs on the TR3 I used TRF master kit. Last month I went through them again and used Moss's Master kit the only diference between the kits Moss had throttle shafts and bushing's and no needles'

Hi Kerry,
The trick with the VB rebuild kit is that the $40 only rebuilds one carb. When you add in the separate charge for the needles, it ends up really costing about $106 to rebuild the carbs. I do not have enough experience to tell a bad kit from a good carb kit. I bought a carb kit from Moss for my Bugeye. When I took the carbs to a British shop for a different problem, they basically said the kit was junk. Spending more money with Moss in that case did not make much of a difference. I am going to try going back to the shop for parts. If they don't have what I need, I am thinking of seeing if Apple Hydraulics sells kits, since they also rebuild them. Does anyone have guidance on what to look for when buying a kit? I would rather spend more money for a good kit than to just get buy with a cheap kit.

You know, Joe Curto out of New york state sells a master rebuild kit for the SU's. I had him reshaft my carb bodies. Good job, fast turn around. You might want to contact him , he is more than willing to talk about what he has to offer and what he can do. I'm sorry but I don't have a link to provide you with but I know that Mickey Richaud does, sorry Mickey.
Cheers, Tinkerman

Good luck, Tinkerman

I have bought rebuild kits from both Victoria British and Moss for my ZS carbs and have found both kits to be lacking - in quality. I finally contacted Gary Martin in South Dakota and he did a concours rebuild on all three carbs that made them essentially brand-spankin new. Micro polished, cadmium plated and all gaskets of a really high qualtiy that I just don't think are avaiable here. He maintains that most of his rebuild parts come from across the pond. 605-391-2422 (I think this is a good number, Richard Good originally recommended him to me, he should have the correct # if this is wrong.)

Bill,
I think you did it the right way. I did my own and am sure there are settings and tricks that do a much better job when a skilled proffessional does the job.
My TR6 was getting 17 mpg before and now gets 25. True it is an improvement but my GT6 got 35. Incedentally, I got 33mpg with my TR4. Given the car size difference and engine difference I know it would not do 35 but I would think it might do closer to 30. Especially since I drive more conservativly now. BTW - gas was 28 cents per gallon when I had the GT6. Less than $3 to fill up. It went up from 25 cents when I had my TR4. Everyone was complaining.

I am not all that interrested in actual milage but in the fact that too rich or too lean is not good for the engine in longevity or performance.

I'm getting ready to rebuild a set of HS6's to install on my TR7, the TRF kit has the needles and jets for both front and rear carbs for $98.
