carb plug replacement

smelled something funny when out for a drive, opened the hood and discovered the inboard (rear?) carb leaking profusely, apparently from the bottom area...I'm assuming the plug. it has always been very loose but never seemed to leak.
Anyways, can I replace this with carbs in place. Or do I need to remove the bowl and do it on the porch (with a beer). Or, remove the whole carb and go on a 12 step program, atleast temporarily.

You can remove the plug and replace the O-ring seal with the carbs on the manifold. I can do it with my thumb nails, working my way around and down.
The plastic tongues that the O-ring slips over may be brittle so just clip the old O-ring off and lube the new one to reduce stress on the tongues.
Sometimes the leak is only a symptom of a flooded float chamber due to needle valve sticking open; and sometimes it is just O-ring failure.
Don't forget, whatever gas is still in the float chamber is going to dump when you pull the plug.

that wasn't too bad, kind of awkward getting the bowl off. My VickyBrit plug came with an o-ring on it so the o-ring I ordered is waiting for the front carb to start leaking. I shouldn't a-said that.
