Carb Damper Covers & Pistons

Seeing that other question about carb dampers reminded me of a problem I have always had with my 73 MGB. After driving anywhere from 30 minutes to all day, the damper "covers" vibrate loose - that is, they unscrew themselves - and the dampers sit open until I discover it and screw them back in. Sometimes one does it; sometimes both do it. The amount of driving time to make it happen varies greatly. I used to fill the dampers until oil showed in the narrowest tube toward the top. A British car mechanic suggested I was overfilling them so now I only fill until the level reaches the very bottom of the narrowest tube. Doesn't matter, still happens.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just a thought... if the threads on the dampers themselves seem worn, and they're loose you might consider ordering new ones (they're not very expensive). You could also try using a thin piece of teflon plumbing tape wrapped once or twice into the threads to tighten them up.

If all else fails you can try a dab of silicon on the side of the cap (apply with a toothpick) after you install the damper.

You don't really have to worry about overfilling them. They seek the "correct" level. If overfilled you see some smoke in your exhaust until the excess is used up. Bob
