Carb Conversion Question - new post

A few threads ago, Scott announced he had purchased a new Hitatchi carb for his car and was selling his HS4. This led me to purchase an HS4 carb - (not Scott's, don't ask)- Anyway, it is correct in that the bolts match the manifold (It was a MGB rear carb) However, the float is angled. I emailed Hap and he sent me to Joe Curto (thanks Hap and Joe) Anyway, Joe said that I need to swap my float ? from the existing AUC1310 to an AUD2140.

My questions is this, are we talking about the float exterior container or the interior guts or both?

I saw this

https://tinyurl.com/d4shs7 which makes me think I'm looking for an adapter

Then I saw this https://tinyurl.com/cd4x8s which makes me think I'm looking for the chamber.

I realize that neither example is a 2140 but some clarity would sure help.

Anyone know what I need to do or look for?

thanks

If your float chamber is angled, there's a little metal locating "tang" that locates it at that angle.
Unbolt the float chamber from the carb body.
Then you can file or cut off that tang and pivot the float chamber to a better angle.
I did this with the HS4 (from a Volvo) that I used on my street 1500 years ago.

The locating tang can be seen above the #28 in the picture below:

So, if I understand you correctly the part number refers to the actual cup/ container/ body of the float and that I can adapt the one I have to do the same thing by filing off the locator tab? Do I need a gasket or anything to hold it in place?

thanks

This shows 3 different HS float bowls. The 1500 has a horizontal manifold. the float chamber needs to be also horizontal AUD2140 is made for that. The AUC1310 can be made to work at several angles by use of the bushings as you had above. Try to find a carb from a Spitfire, and you'll have the bowl you'll need, or try the filing advise above.

No added gasket required.....just assemble as normal, being sure the float chamber is "level" when on the car.

Nial,
So, in your experience, this does not lead to leakage or the bowl twisting around in use?
Thanks,
Adrian

No. Ran mine like that for at least two years.

Bowl never moved a bit.

Remember, the fluid connection is not thought this bolt or the area around it.

Fuel from the float bowl to the carb main jet is via a small flexible hose.
