Carb Choices

What are you using to power your LBC? I'm rebuilding a '71 TR6 and have a pair of Zenith-Strombergs and SU-H6's to choose from. Any comments on the performance and power of these applications?

I tend to like SUs a bit more than ZS, simply because they are easier to tune and the tunable bits are easier to get to. Honestly, the power delivery will be very similar...so it will come down to your feeling about originality vs. ease-o-tuning. (And if you feel comfortable with both, then it's a toss-up.)

I think the SU's are better looking because they can be polished up without much trouble. From an operational stand point, I think they are even. I have never seen any flow data on either.

Will the SU H6 carbs not cause clearance problems with the TR6 bonnet?

"Will SU carbs cause clearance problems with TR6 bonnet"

Not to my knowledge. I've seen them used in a couple of sixes with no modification.

I like pasta. Oh wrong carbs. SUs are the way to go, nearly as powerful as the webers, a fraction of the price, and easier to keep in tune, and maintain.

Hello all,
one of the main advantages of S.U. over Stromberg is the metal piston versus the rubber diaphragm, the pistons are much, much longer lasting. (as long as you do not use an abrasive to clean them)

This may be against the grain but start to enjoy your car. Put on a new webber conversion kit and drive it away. Easy to install and simple to tune. Yeah I know it's not stock or British or what ever you can think of. Bottom line is the car runs great every time I drive it.

Ok, I'll be the lone voice for originality. I originally had bought a weber carb setup for my frame off, but decided against it in favor of restoring it completely stock. The Zeniths are a bit more work, but I had my resident expert rebuild them and the car runs like a champ. In fact, I put 75K on the car before I tore it apart and never touched the carbs other than an occasional idle adjustment and making sure the dashpots were topped up.,The car always started and ran fine. I vote for keeping it stock....

With one of each (SU & ZS) on the 4 cyl engines I like them equally well. Never had a diaphragm rip though I do carry a spare. The ZS choke is slightly less fussy on mine. The SU fuel bowl is much easier to get at.

IMO -- the stock set-up wins if it is a tie.

Thanks all for the comments, they are very helpful. I rebuilt the ZS' some years back and am now working up the SU's. My opinion, I like the SU design better; easier to handle, polish-up and appears to be a less complicated design. I also prefer the throttle shaft linkage, it appears more robust than similar ZS. Of course its not on the car and running yet so I'll keep everyone posted.
