Two things..
First off, in New York a car older than 76 or so does not have a title. it's title is the registration which is transferrable. But, it must be signed by the last person to register the car (or a legal executor if thier estate in the event of death) and you need the bill of sale, but that can be on a napkin for all the DMV here cares.
Secondly, I know what you guys are saying about finding a VIN, but please be careful about posting things like that on open forums as what your suggesting is a federal offense. Belive me I've been in the same spot, thinking the same thing (for a while I had a 1979 CJ7 in an envelope.. but I never did use it). if ya wanna do it, I ain't gonna stop you, but I ain't gonna officially suggest it either.
