Car Run Today - but Sad News

We did a car run from Eureka to Crecent City (CA) today.
Stopped at the viewpoint at Requa (saw my first whale!).
Jim Moranda,one of our group,has a very nice restored
TR3 (the car's near perfect).The parking lot was almost full-
(did you know that you can park a Mini & MGB in one parking-
spot?),so we parked at a 90 degree angle to the other cars.
I walked away,looking out on the ocean,when I heard a sad
sound.I found out that a tourist in a Buick from Colorado back-
ed into Jim's TR3!
Jim is one of the nicest people that you'll ever meet.He
wasn't upset at all,but the guy in the Buick was saying that
the Triumph shouldn't have been parked there.
I'm hoping that this will all work out.

No,he wasn't bald,just seemed to go on & on about details.
He wanted the CHP to show up - they won't,unless there are injuries,
or vehicles blocking the road.
One of our group was also an eyewitness,& tried to stop the
guy from hitting it,but too late.

Am I misunderstanding things, or was the TR3 actually in a parking spot? I can't fathom how TR was parked at 90 degrees to the other cars and still be in a parking spot.

(I used to be a parking lot attendant, so these details jump out at me)

It was a parking area,overlooking the Pacific.Almost all
of the spaces were filled,so we parallel parked against the curb.
The Buick driver failed to watch while he was backing up.

Was it a parking spot, though? I'm just saying, if you park your car against a curb, and you're not supposed to park there, and someone backs into it, you share a good portion of the blame by leaving your car where it's not supposed to be. I mean, if the curb area isn't meant for parking, it's probably for a reason.

I'm not saying it does, at least not entirely. But again, if the TR was where it shouldn't be, then I have rather less sympathy for it's driver. He presumably knew the risks, took that risk, and lost.

It reminds me of the people who used to park in the striped area next to the handicapped spots "just to run in the store for a minute" and get ticketed, then complain about it. Gambled and lost.

Howdy Folks,

I had a similar exp. in a "Post Office" parking lot.

I had a TR4A at that time. There were several "BIG" cars parked perpendicular (90deg) to the to the front of the Post Office. I was pulling out onto the street, waiting for some traffic to go by (I was 90deg to the parked cars) as one "Elderly" woman got in her "Buick" and next thing I saw were her "Back-Up Lights" came on & she started slowly backing up!!

I started Yelling (STOP), Blowing my horn etc. She creamed me right in my the middle of my drivers side door. She apoligized etc etc but the morale to this story is: Due to her age (70+); Could she hear? Obviously, Never looked back to see if anyone was behind her.

What age bracket would you say this "Buick" creep was?

BTW, in most areas the "white striped areas" in the really prime areas in parking lots, etc., are FIRE LANES, meant for FIRE TRUCKS and EMT parking during emergencies. NOT for lazy SOBs' parking spots!

One of my pet peeves, of course, are sops who illegally park in handicapped spots. A VERY close second is for knuckleheads who park in fire lanes.

If you know anyone who enjoys the fire lane spots, tell them that fire trucks <span style="text-decoration: underline">WILL</span> nudge your car out of the way in an emergency. Fire truck = 1, illegally parked cars = 0.

This is cleary 100% the Buick drivers fault. Whether the car was parked legally or not the fact is it was non-operational at the time. The Buick driver obviously didn't check before backing up and is liable for this and I'll wager his insurance company will pay the claim 100%. JMHO.
