Car pulls to right

Just as I got my brake problem sorted out, I now have a new problem.

I had to change the bottom bush on the stub axle on the left handside and also the side rod on the right hand side.

Before I did that the car braked normally. Now, and especially at higher speed it pulls strongly to the right :cryin:

I thought that I might have put the brake shoes on wrongly, changed them around, but that didn't improve anything.

Re-adjusted the brakes once again but still no change. Also no air bubbles in the brake system.

I'm at a lost and I need your advice once more

Does this happen only when braking or does it pull right all the time?

If it's only when braking I would suspect the left front brakes are not working correctly - possibly a wheel cylinder with air inside or a manufacturing defect inside the wheel cylinder causing the piston to hang-up or.....

Obvously you would have noticed any oil/grease on the shoes - I have had situation where some oil was on the shoes & caused initial braking on that wheel to be 'grabby' and then as it gets hotter from friction, it goes the other way and reduces the braking action on that wheel. I know these are new but...

A check you can do with a helper. Pull the front drums one at a time and have an assistant apply the brakes slowly while you watch carefully to see that both wheel clylinders are actuating and moving the shoes. Must be careful not to over-do the brake pedal or you will push the pistons out of the cylinders. Doing this you may be able to tell if one of the cylinders is not moving, or not moving as much as the others.

good luck
Dave

If it was me, I'd be up to 3 or 4 beers by now!

Hi red57

It only pulls right on braking.

I checked the movement of the cylinders and their fine. I didn't find any fluid, oils, or grease on the brake pads.

The only additional thing I did noticed was that, while breaking hard, not only does the car pull strongly to the right, but the right rear brake also locks up (not the left one).

You're done done adjusting the brakes, if you're getting a wheel to lock up. The RF may be adjusted too tight (or the LF too loose) as well.

Little trick...and I need the answer to proceed.....when you do this, let go the wheel, but keep your fingers around the rim....step on the brakes, and be very observant:

Does the wheel turn, THEN the car, or does the car turn and THEN the wheel?
Makes a difference in troubleshooting.

 I know what you're thinking.

I'd like to know both reasons.
It is difficult to say but it seems as though the wheelturns first and then the car pulls as the steering wheel moves to the right on lite pressure.

Wheel turns first, front brakes. Wheel waits a second to turn after the car starts turning, rear brakes.
I would be most concerned with troubleshooting with rears, since one rear locks up.

Got the problem fixed

The right brake was definitely braking stronger than the left.

Took everything apart and noticed that the bottom wheel adjuster on the left brake was bent. It could be that it adjusted the brake properly but when strong pressure was applied, it slipped. (just an idea but not sure).

I also discovered that there was a minimal minimal leak from the left brake line. Tightened that up, reset the brakes, and now the car runs fine. :driving:

Once again, many thanks to you all for your help. :thankyousign:
