Car dollies

Not to long ago there was a thread here showing some cars being moved by car dollies. In case anyone is interested, Northern Tool and Equipment has a sale on car dollies. I bought two sets of two (four dollies) for $80 total. Each one is rated for 1000#. I havn't put my car on them yet, but they look very good.

They are really handy to move a car in the garage in close quarters. I found that the floor needs to be spotless, those steel caster wheels tend to hang on almost anything. Another problem is for cars that don't have a locking steering column, the fronts tend to turn the wheels instead of tracking as desired, so tie down the steering before trying to move the car.

I also heard that when your floor is spotless, you need to be real careful, as the car can roll right into the wall very easily !!

I would hate for that to happen.

$80 is a great price, I've seen them for sale in the hundreds . . .

If your floor is all that clean, just use a can of "Pam" cooking spray ahead of the intended path of the tires, then just push the car anywhere you want. Brakes on,in gear, whatever. I turned my A35 Austin sideways and pushed it right up to the washing maching on winter. On most any LBC, this works pretty well. Of course I weigh 200lbs so YMMV.

Glen, how does the Pam, vegetable oil spray, help out on a clean floor? does it make it stickier to keep it from getting out of control?

Michael

I think what glen is saying, if you have a clean floor, you don't need the dollies, instead just spray the floor with Pam, to slick'n it up, and you can rotate the car on the floor that way.

interesting to say the least !!!!

Exactly right Joe. You can just push the car sideways. I have a smooth concrete floor, but its hard to push a car sideways without the spray. With it, its pretty easy. After I got done what needed doing, I just resprayed the intended tire arc on the floor and pushed it back around to where I wanted it. My neighbor stood across the street and stared in amazement.

Of course that was before you slipped on the PAM and broke an important part of your anatomy. Or your better half kicked your butt for taking her cooking spray out of the kitchen or tracked PAM in on your shoes on her clean carpet. This sounds like a recipe for trouble.

or couldn't do any laundry for 6 months

I cant find them on the website. Do you have a part number or URL?

Too bad the price went up to $120 + shipping for the set of 4.

Charlie, next time you're up this way and looking for a place with cool stuff, be sure to check out Agri-Supply. It is off I-40 exit 306 (US-70 eastbound). It's only about 1/2 mile off the interstate. Really, really, neat stuff at good prices. They also have the dollies. Last time I was there I believe their regular price for them was just about what you paid. In addition to all the farm equipment they have lots of tools and such. You'll be close anyway, be sure and take a look.

Thanks Doug,
I do know about Agri-supply, but I did not think about them for the dollies. I believe they have a web site and maybe forum readers can order dollies at the good price. I'll check it out myself.
Charlie

Agri Supply does have the dollies listed as wheel dollies on their web site and the price is $32.50 each. The picture shows two so I am not sure whether the price is for a pair, or each dolly.

Hey Charlie. When I was last in Agri-Supply, the dollies were in boxes of two.

I used to work next door to Agri-Supply when our company was located in Garner. Whenever we needed mechanical hardware (that wasn't metric) they were a great source for cheap parts. I still get down there a couple of times a year and browse their shelves in detail each time... never knowing what I'll find.

When I've tried using their web site in the past I found it to be nearly useless. Things I knew they had on the shelves could not be located through any search method I tried. Hopefully that's improving!
