The guy couldn't get a job as First Mate on the SS Minnow now!

Yeah really, what's he gonna do now? You couldn't even use him in a Long John Silver's commercial.

I do have to admit, I never knew they were serious about the captain going down with the ship.

That's only if there is a question that all aboard are not safely off the vessel. This weasel (and a lot of the crew as well) acted with cowardice, IMO. No excuse is adequate for their actions. Ship 'em off to Elba!

put them on a boat around Somolia

Now you're being hard on the guy. Remember, he accidentally slipped and fell into the lifeboat.

Sad fact about it is he WOULDN'T have gone down with the ship. I've always wondered what I would do in a real intense situation like that, but no way in ......you know, down there, would I have gotten off that ship without everybody else that I could save. What a putz!!! :wall:

They played the one radio transmission between him and the coast guard
coast guard: "You abandoned ship?!"
capt.: "I did not "abandon ship". It was going down so I got off."
Now this audio was caught during the event, not later, after he had a chance to make up lame excuses.
Hmmm... last time I checked, getting off a sinking ship is generally called "abandoning".
