Cannot get my upper crank bearing shell to budge..

Tried the nylon tie, tried the feeler gauge. On the rear bearing, should I loosen the #3 bearing cap a bit to let it "sag" although not sure it will. Will leave the rear cap off overnight. NOBODY in this little burg has green Plastigauge, or any other color for that matter. The clerk at AutoZone said, "What's Plastigauge?" I new I was in trouble.

Want to check the wear, might be able to salvage the bearings. They are 1 over.

Bill, Where's the nearest NAPA store? You are trying to get the end with the tab out first?

Take a wooden paint stir and cut off about four to six inches. Make sure the end is square and the same, or a little less thick then the bearing. Place it on the end of the bearing away from the tab and as much as you can on the steel, then give it a tap to break it free. Sounds scary, but I saw it done by diesel mechanics and have employed the technique with no problem. Just DON'T KING KONG it, or whack the drive shaft.

Re: Cannot get my upper crank bearing shell to bud

Thanks, NAPA opens in the morning. What a shame that Big Box auto stores are really more for bling than anything. All my tools are NAPA.

The turned part of the crank looks ok, just the back one so far. Would it be safe to assume that if one is good than they all are or should I Plastigauge them all. What a PITA. Guess I may as well do the rod bears as well.

Bill,

I don't believe that you should take the chance of not checking all of the bearings, just to be sure. If for nothing else, than to check the crank completely and the wear pattern (if any) on the bearing shells.

You've come this far by the book, no time for shortcuts now.

Instead of wood, I've used an old bearing insert. Pound it flat, then use the soft bearing side next to the crank. Rap on the end with a hammer.

Yep, done that too, just forgot... ah what day is it, oh Monday, or so my pill box says.

Re: Cannot get my upper crank bearing shell to bud

I read in some place where its is described how to replace bearings and I think the person used a brass rod that slipped in the oil passage hole and stuck out just enough to catch the bearing and used the crankshafts rotation to roll the upper shell out

Re: Cannot get my upper crank bearing shell to bud

Years ago, we used to flatten the head of a cotter pin in a vise. (making a "T" driver of sorts) Then we would insert the pin end into the oil journal of a crank and turn the crank to allow the flattened end to push the bearing shell out as it rotated around the journal.

Re: Cannot get my upper crank bearing shell to bud

Pete, they did that on the East Coast, too?

Well, Gollee, Thought that was a SoCal thing!

Not really, just funnin' with you. How's the engine coming.

Re: Cannot get my upper crank bearing shell to bud

Ron,

Either Mac or Snap On later made a small set of those at one time, ready to drop in the oil journals, but that goes back to the 60's.

The old engine is just about out of the car. I dropped the head off at the machine shop today. Flu bug has hit everyone in NE so far. Machinist's are back to work, but a week behind, so mine gets machine work done next week instead of this week. No big deal, parts are all here. New Wizard aluminum rad arrived today with Spal fan and wiring kit.

Just waiting for Masters headlamp wiring kit to do it all while the engine is out of the car.

Transmission leak that developed over the winter will have to be fixed now too. That may have to go over to Quantum in CT while engine is out.. I'll know tomorrow about that little issue.

Sigh.....it never ends with these leaks.

Hey, I just realized, I'm not Pete! That's the second time that you did that Rob!

Sheesh, Paul, Can't even fun with you anymore.

Hey, I recommend Airborne, why? Because it works. I deal with the public and am exposed to just about every handshaking germ available.

Whenever I feel even a slight scratching in my throat, or any other symptom of an onset of a pulmonary infection, I take an airborne. They come in tubes and are water soluble wafers kinda like Alka-seltzer.

If you do get caught with a cold(I keep a tube with me now on the road, in addition to one in the medicine box) double the dosage, or half the time interval. Instead of one every 4 hours, take one every two hours. The cold, allergy, whatever goes away REAL FAST.

I get mine from costco.

PS everyone I preach to about Airbornes benefits, that I ask later who has tried it agrees with me about it's quick acting protection.
