After all the negative stuff Ive heard and read about the spin on filters I have decided to put my cannister back on. Has anyone ever modified one of the originals with a plug on the top for toping it with oil prior to start up? Just kicking Ideas around.Bob

Hi Bob, I am concerned about your statement, negative stuff about spin on oil filters. I have purchased one, with a K&N filter, which I was told was the filter to get. Would you please share what negative you have head. For I have not installed mine yet, and would like to know the pros and cons. I've only heard good things so far. Thank you, Roger

I think there is more negative about the canister than spin on.

Ive been told they drain off and when you restart the engine they have to fill back up starving the engine of oil.
Also Ive read that Fram is the worst for this. I have been advised by some reputable sources (Healey restoration folks)Not to use these. I must admit I am somewhat of a pureist and like to keep cars as close to stock as possible , Bob

BOB & AUSMHLY, Lots of discussion on this subject in the archives.--- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gifKeoke

Hi BlueRidge, I installed one on my BJ7 the summer before last and have been having no trouble with it. I have used a Wix and an AC filter with it. My oil pressure is right on the spot, and have experienced no leaks or other negatives with it. I Bought it from Moss. I coated the gasket lightly with Black RTX Silicone gasket maker before I installed it.

Bob,

We have been installing spin on oil filter for several years.
No complaints. I have one on my BN4 (29K engine) for 3 years now. I found an increase in pressure and no drain back. We use NAPA Gold #1516 or Wix 51516 filter. (same filter) This filter has a anti-drain valve. The cannister filter if not assembled correctly does not function properly. I recommend that you use the spin on.

If drain back is your only concern, the filters suggested by Jerry will work well. I personally like the K&N HP-2009 filter. It has a big nut on the end (not me) to make removal easier.

You can even pre fill the can with oil & screw it on without losing much oil. Saves a dry start.

According to several different filter evaluation & inspections, the Fram has the worst construction including an often leaky anti drain back valve.

After getting all this feedback and reading the archive stuff I'll probably leave the spin adapter in place and try the K-N or the wix. Moss sent me the fram... Thanks Bob
