Was wondering if anyone could tell by these chassis, body and engine numbers if a car I am looking at to buy is actually a 1964. I know Healeys fairly well but not MGBs.

Chassis or ID# is GHN3L/31160.
Body(?)# is MGB 030575
Engine # is 18GAUH604

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kurt

Kurt, those numbers match what I have listed for a '64. It's a fairly early '64 engine number, with an early mid year chassis number. All entirely feasible as an original '64.

I have learned so far that there is a date stamp on the engine block, just behind the dizzy. It's round and has the year (last two as in 64) as well as the month of production. It's part of the actual casting. Someone once posted an example for me, perhaps they'll catch this thread.

Here's a diagram of an engine clock. It' off of a 70 MGB engine. Located under the distributor. I think it reads that the engine block was cast February, 8th, 1970. PJ

Thanks 19 and Paul. Was out of town for a while. Have to check the engine block and look for those numbers. Good Info.

I don't know anything about block castings, but don't the Brits put the day first then the month when writing a date? So this might be 2 august 70

That is correct,day/month/year. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Thanks guys, now I know why I always thought my mail from the UK was always late! HaHaHa. Got my months and days mixed up.PJ

It should also have a fuel tank held in with straps, not bolts like the later (65) and up. It should also have a mechanical tach, positive earth, etc.

May not have the mechanical tach. Ours has an electric one.
