Can anyone recommend a good shop to rebuild 1500

I am interested in finding a shop that rebuilds 1500 engines. My plan is to have on hand a spare 1500 that has been rebuilt. I'd like to do some upgrading of the spare engine as well to a stage II with flat pistons, etc. Does anyone have recommendations on companys they gave used or at least things I should be looking o asking when I contact a shop?

Any local machine shop should be able to rebuild the motor. I used a local shop here in Las Vegas, Universal Machine and Engines. I chose them because they have a reputation for building high performance drag racing engines. Probably some of the best engines on the west coast. I figure, if they can build a 1000+ hp motor, they surely can handle a 66 hp 4 cylinder. They did a GREAT job. I'd strongly recommend chosing a shop that specialized in high performance motors.

Other then choosing a reputable machinist, buy your parts yourself and just have the shop install them. You'll save a lot of money as if the shop buys them, you will pay a markup on the parts.

Most (not all) of my parts were bought from British Parts Northwest https://www.bpnorthwest.com. I did buy my cam from Advanced Performance Technology https://www.aptfast.com, and a few parts from LB CAR CO https://www.lbcarco.com.

If you buy a cam from APT, I DO NOT recommend buying their double chain vernier cam gears. The lower cam gear would not fit on my crank (it was .002 undersized). They sent me another cam gear and same thing. I was so frustrated (after spending $280.00 on the set), I returned it to them. I bought a set made in germany from BP Northwest and it fit right on without a problem (and it was $100.00 CHEAPER).

No, he's just a friend of mine who has a Brit-car shop near my house. I borrow all his tools and do the work myself! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pete did help me with some valve work recently and he hooked me up with a guy who did my 1500 block re-boring (+.020") for a good price.
And we just used his account to get a better deal on a re-cut crank (from Storm Crank, NY). With bearing thustwashers and so forth, under $400 USD.
Side benefit: All his customers get invited to his annual pig-roast.
