camber adjustment eccentric bushings

I see that Moss has 2 methods of adjusting camber, eccentric bushings and a new top plate. Naturally the bushings are the cheap fix

Any drawbacks for normal road use?

One and half to two negative degrees max, if your keep it under 120 mph you'll be fine.

Mine squeak. The amount of change is hardly worth the bother unless you have tires wider than 185/70.

Ive just finished my bj8 and took it to my local scooby specialist who set up my wrx on their laser alignment, we managed to get the front from 2 to zero using the offset bushes, also squared up the rear axle which was also out (amazing the few millimetres of moving the axle on the clearance hole on the spring bolt /axle mount makes) we then set the toe in and then adjusted the steering wheel to centre.
I had previously set it up with a rough straight edge, amazing the difference to drive now, well worth doing. Will post a pic later when not on iPad as it won't let me load files.

Can you give a little more info on squaring up the rear axle. I have my BJ8 about an 1/8 off center.

Jerry

hi Jerry
even though the rear axle it tied in with the radius arms, the axle can still be tilted to the left or right as the axle is strapped to the centre of the spring using the u bolts.
if you loosen the u bolts you can move the axle, with a pry bar, but only as far as the clearance hole on the axle mounting bracket lets the axle move against the spring, ie there is a bolt holding all the leafs together on the spring and this sits in the hole on the axle bracket, with slight clearance between the bolt and hole. This can make the rear axle sit again 2 deg to one side, see next pics after we squared her up.

I will check it out. I thought the pin into the springs did not allow much adjustment, but your discription sounds like it will work. Thanks.

Jerry

we first got old rusty on the ramp with laser plates on the wheels, then squared up the rear axle to show the 0 deg on the screen, the front offset bushes were set centrally as the screen shows with 2 deg, we then took it off the alignment and set them fully on the horizontal plane giving 0 deg, the centre steering then set to 0.18 which i am told is acceptable in modern cars

Hi just signed up today and read your blog super interesting , I always wondered if the back end could be checked .?and although I didn't have time to take the car for a lazar check due to covid , I was able to get the alignment close to settings with regard to toe in , I think you answered another question which I wanted to ask being steering alignment after doing the wheels , which for me means pulling out the self cancelling unit from the steering shaft and moving the steering wheel to the correct position and then replacing it. I don't know any other way and because i refurbished the steering box and replaced with new track rod ends ,so when replacing the steering to my marks I made it , now seems way out ?

Ray, welcome to the Austin-Healey Forum. The thread you replied to is almost nine years old. It's likely that most of the people who participated in it nine years ago have since dropped out, just no longer check in here, or are sitting on a cloud and playing a harp. It's very likely that some good soul - who is not yet sitting on a cloud playing a harp - will respond, but if you're trying to contact a specific forum member it may be best to send them a Private Message. You could also just start a new thread and state your questions there.

Thanks for joining the forum. I'm sure you'll find it to be of great benefit.

Welcome Ray. I recognize about half the names in this thread as still being around. We are quite an active group here.

I can see that replacing the rod ends might change the steering wheel angle. You may be able to pull the trafficator part way out and turn the steering wheel a notch. You don't want to fuss with the wires any more than you have to. Do you have the adjustable wheel or non-adjustable?

Oh come on Reid, some of us still have hair that's not all gray....:encouragement:
