cam tappet article from Hot Rod mag

I've posted this article before but it always captures new eyes each time it reappears.

Thanks.

GMs EOS (Engine Oil Supplement), added to the oil at 2oz per 5 qts oil, will increase the ZDP by 160 ppm. (Or so they say). At $8.00 per 16 oz bottle, it's pretty cheap per oil change.

Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment, Has lots of Moly and ZDP. added at the ratio of 1 oz per qt, will add 100 ppm of Moly and 75 ppm of ZDP. It's $4.00 per 15 oz bottle. Not bad on price either.

I think that the suggestion to use Rottela or other diesel rated oils is a better idea. Modern lube oils are VERY complicated chemicals, and randomly adding an additive of any type will not necessarily improve the lubricating or protective properties of the oil.

You have to be careful here also, because, as of 2007, diesel oils will be reducing the ZDDP as the big rigs start using catalytic converters.
