cam choice

Okay,
I promised a buddy that I would post some questions for the motor we are building for him.
I should have kept notes on what I built.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

He is also looking very closely at cost.
Am I correct in thinking that if he buys a cam---as long as it is for a 1275 it "will fit"?
Has anyone had any experience with this one?

I believe that mine is a kent 276... Does this sound correct? I can't remember what I ended up getting. What are differences in quality that we should be looking at for cams? Is there even such a thing that should even really be considered?

Amy $$$ sources for quality pistons and rings? He wants flats 30+.

Boz, the 276 is only a model number in the Kent Megadyne series. It was developed by David Vizard, and the specs can be found in his book. Victoria British sell the kit under their part number 17-153.
Davids' note describes it as "Slightly lopey idle, okay in traffic. Strong mid and top end increase."
I've never run one, as I tend to go a bit more radical in my cam choices.
Jeff

I have heard from APT and others that the new cams are not as strong as reground ones. I have a VP7 that I am very happy with, but it all depends upon your application. My cam is slightly milder than the 276.

Pat

I use David Anton's (APT) version of the 276 in my street motors, MD276, he grinds them on late model slot drive oil pump cam cores, and has them nitirited, get the slot drive oil pump and is CF-04 lifters from APT, and you got yourself a sweet little package. I highly recommend it.
To top it all off David, Lorrie and the entire APT gang are first class people, and a joy to deal with.

I found this here
It's always hard fiding the numbers when you need them.

KENT CAMS (MEGADYNE RANGE)
Duration In / Ex LobeCenter Lift at 1.25 ratio lift at 1.5 ratio
MD256 Mild Road 254/254 106 .320/.320 .380/.380
MD266 Fast Road 260/268 106 .320/.330 .380/.390
MD276 Road Rally 270/280 106 .360/.380 .430/.455
MD286 Rally 280/290 106 .388/.400 .460/.468
MD296 Race 290/300 106 .400/.420 .470/.495
MD310 Full Race 310/310 106 .420/.420 .495/.495

Oh, I think a 276 is in Miss Agathas future when I find a second 948 within reach.

Jack we have a 948 in your area that we are waiting to get up here /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I love the sound and performance of the 276. So does Paul. An knowing that Jeff and Hap uses them.... And that folks is why we are putting one in his!!

Just made a deal for a 948 complete in running condition and he will hold till I get up to Atlanta area visiting daughter in the spring. Came out of a 62.

North to the South and South to the North, Hmmm. Makes a strange kind of sence I supose.

Nice find, Jack. I'll have a spare 948 once I get the new 1275 installed in the Tunebug this winter. Some day it would be nice to do a rebuild and have a spare motor around. It's the original block from new, so I'll never separate them.

Going to need more storage space, that's for sure. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Oh, and since Hap is building my motor, I'm pretty sure the cam he mentioned is the one going in my 1275. Don't have my notes handy, but that's probably it. Getting close with that build now, and I'm getting really excited!

Is this cam the "scatter" pattern? Or can various profiles be "scattered" by putting them on the shaft in an uneven pattern. That is: is any cam grind available as a "scatter" or "non-scatter" type?

I would love to have another 1275 as an extra. Shoot, I would love to have the one I got now running and not leaking. Wait, it runs like a ban-chi, just need to get her to stop leaking as well. Although I do think its the tranny.

No, the 276 isn't a "scatter pattern."
As far as grinding a specific profile or pattern, that would have to be determined by the grinder.
Jeff

I understood the scatter part to be cam lobe centers that were a few degrees advanced or retarded from symmetry. This was to improve breathing with the siamesed exhaust ports in the A-series. Are the various profiles made in symmetrical and scatter pattern?

I guess what I am asking is: does the scatter part really work as advertised? Or is it an improvement only at race RPM's? Or is that the whole point anyway. BTW my new APT 1380 has their VP-3 cam which is a scatter pattern IIRC, perhaps even a 276 grind. It is not installed yet, but has been dyno'd.

Jeff, will try for a 295 head, maybe next fall. Got to find one first.

My plans for that 948 inclue 206 or 295 head, 276 cam, H2 carbs, 1275 exhaust, and what ever I need for pistons. Hopefully it will pull about 70 HP and be a happy little no leaker. Have some more ideas on sealing scroll seals.

The VP3 is a straight grind. The scatter version is the SPVP3. I'm running an SPVP3 in a highly tuned 1098, and have nothing but good to say about it. But, as a caveat, this engine sees high RPM use most of the time. It's tractable in traffic, but prefers to be wound up.
I'd suggest reading the relevant sections in David Vizards' book for more information regarding cam selection.
Jeff
