Just wondering ... where does the text that shows up in the "caller id" window of the phone come from?
Is it something the owner of the phone number can specify? or is it how the service provider lists the owner? or ...?
Is it changeable?
Lots of the junk calls I get are identified as "Toll Free Call" or "out of area" or "unknown" or "--- --- ----" or "Wireless caller". But never a name.
If there's no name, I don't answer. I figure it's like that for millions of us who are pestered by these folks. No name = no answer.
Now, if a company wanted to contact me - for whatever spurious purpose - wouldn't you think they'd at least put some believable name in the Caller ID box? Do they think people are more likely to answer calls with "Toll Free Call" or "out of area" or "unknown", etc.?
Just call me "Perplexed in Connecticut".
