I have an iPhone 3GS (and love it, by the way). However, don't plan to upgrade to the iPhone 4 any time soon (for one thing my iPhone 3GS does everything I need for personal and business use). When reports first began to surface that people were having an unusually high number of dropped calls on the iPhone 4, at first Apple denied that anything was wrong. The iPhone 4 has it's antenna on the outside (it is basically the metal surround that forms the case). Initially, Apple was telling people they were just holding it wrong (oh, good answer - ha!). Now Apple is telling us that the signal strength meter (bars) is showing low strength because they were using the wrong calculations to determine the number of bars to show.

Umm, yeah, right - maybe. But the problem I have with that explanation is that it doesn't explain the increased number of dropped calls that former 3 GS users are reporting. I mean, you can devise system that will show whatever signal strength you want for a given S/N. It means nothing. What I would like to see is some independent testing that measures the relative S/N going into the receiver from the iPhone 4 antenna versus the 3GS antenna. (Assuming the Rx front end hasn't changed). Just telling me your going to show me more bars doesn't solve the underlying issue in my humble opinion - show me the data!

OK; you're a skeptic. Does that make you a member of some druidic sect?

My contract is up on AT&T where I am currently using a Blackberry. I love the e-mail aspect of the Blackberry, but I am PO'd with them because their contact sync software doesn't yet work with Office 2010 (they have had over a year to get ready for that - so much for being business friendly). I also want to get one of the newer phones with the bigger screen and have been checking out nerd forums like www.boygeniousreport, where they have loads of info on the iPhone issues. The 2 camps (iPhone vs anything Android based) are way more partisan than Triumph vs MG.

Some of the Android based phones seem good, but because Verizon doesn't have much of an offering of phones that will work abroad, I was thinking of joining the iPhone sect until I saw all these issues.

Much easier in the days when a cell phone was just a phone.

There are a couple lawsuits brewing in different states now. I was thinking of getting the 4 since my phone is getting long in the tooth. A new battery would probably fix my problem since it is almost three years old. I never have dropped calls with AT&T, so it is likely the problem lies in Apple's design. My boss has a 3GS and the call quality blows. Steve Jobs says the 4 has the best quality calls of any iphone. I guess higher than "blows" could be "sucks".

My Western Electric Type 300 dial desk phone still works just fine, and I can disable burglars with the handpiece alone.

On the first row of three photos, mine is the style on the left side.

The call quality on my 3GS is fine. I'm quite happy. However, I have been less than thrilled with AT&T coverage. I ended up buying a Micro Cell for my house because being out in the sticks I essentially had no coverage. The Micro Cell gives me 5 bars anywhere in the house.

My boss may just have a bad phone (less than two months old though). I used both mine and hers back to back, same network, same spot outdoors in Hollywood. Huge difference in quality vs. my old HTC 3125. I may still give the 4G a try out. I think the restocking fee has been waived now if I do have issues with it.

Think I'll stick with my present phone until the issues are ironed out

Hahaha, Dad, I've said the same thing for years and matter of fact, said it earlier today. My buddy is currently into restoring old Singer sewing machines.

Don...when did you upgrade?

Greg, broke my string and couldn't find repair parts.

I heard that people were sueing over the new iPhone.
If they're having a problem, why not just return it for a
refund?

- Doug

Not that simple. With a restocking fee and an early termination fee (if you got the 2 year contract) It is over $300 dollars to return the phone. You might get another phone through AT&T and sidestep the termination fee, but they don't have anything else like the iphone.

That phone in your Bimmer Anthony? Sure looks like a BMW console. My 91 has a hole in the center console where one used to be.
Ad for my cell phone... It makes and receives calls just fine. It's supposed to do other things?
Gotta get a new leather belt for my Singer. I've been told that with the proper needle, the old treadle powered Singers will do upholstery work. I may try a set of new seat covers.
