I have an iPhone 3GS (and love it, by the way). However, don't plan to upgrade to the iPhone 4 any time soon (for one thing my iPhone 3GS does everything I need for personal and business use). When reports first began to surface that people were having an unusually high number of dropped calls on the iPhone 4, at first Apple denied that anything was wrong. The iPhone 4 has it's antenna on the outside (it is basically the metal surround that forms the case). Initially, Apple was telling people they were just holding it wrong (oh, good answer - ha!). Now Apple is telling us that the signal strength meter (bars) is showing low strength because they were using the wrong calculations to determine the number of bars to show.
Umm, yeah, right - maybe. But the problem I have with that explanation is that it doesn't explain the increased number of dropped calls that former 3 GS users are reporting. I mean, you can devise system that will show whatever signal strength you want for a given S/N. It means nothing. What I would like to see is some independent testing that measures the relative S/N going into the receiver from the iPhone 4 antenna versus the 3GS antenna. (Assuming the Rx front end hasn't changed). Just telling me your going to show me more bars doesn't solve the underlying issue in my humble opinion - show me the data!
