Caliper Rebuilds

I recently aquired a disc brake front end for my Bugeye. (thanks Vince!) Just to see if they were available I looked online at a few of the national autoparts stores to see if rebuilt calipers were available and they were! I saw Cardone rebuilds for $30/ea, Bendex for $43 and Beck Arnley for $56. Considering the cost of a new piston is $19, this seems the way to go.

Has anyone gone this route and have any feedback?

I rebuilt my own. Toooooo easy. I reused the old piston with no problems.

Morris,

I rebuilt the ones on my B, while not difficult it wasn't the easiest rebuild, maybe the spridget ones are different. But for $30 at the bottom end, I dunno that's not much more than the parts. Also, my cores are pretty gnarly and will need to be media blasted. (I do have a cabinet tho')

Guess I just got lucky. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Often, the suppliers are out of stock on the rebuilt ones. I'd at least take yours apart to see if they are serviceable.

IF your now pieces.......caliper pistons not corroded or scored on the bore faces.......and there are no deep rust pits in the caliper bodies....then you might D.I.Y....

BUT........you will be spending about $13 /caliper for kit and o-ring......and an hour or two time per caliper, cleaning etc.....OH.....and a new bleed screw $2...

so you decide.

I agree Jerry, but for the past 5 months, the suppliers have been hit or miss on these units (maybe a core supply issue). Of course, if you go to a cardone dealer, they can send in your units for a rebuild for the same cost.

I contacted rockauto ... they have the raybestos rebuilds, but none of the others.

Thanks Trevor,

I still need to go by my local autoparts store to see what they can get, but probably the same thing.

Thats the problem.....you all are "looking in the wrong places"

mass merchandisers like A-Zone, CSK, Pep, do not normally carry English car parts let alone a Z (slow) mover like a Spridget or a B reman caliper.

You need to go to a full service independent parts store. Try a store that deals a lot in UK imports. What about Peter C.??? Its not all about price.

Cardone is a major rebuilder. Bendix and Raybestos both have remans but they might not have much volume in these import numbers.....let alone a core supply.

""""""Is anybody selling the stainless pistons for the Spridgets? I made the last set of mine, but buying would be easier.

well...lessee.....

Stock SPM calipers are 2.00" or 51mm P8303

Honda Civic late 80's are 51mm and might be usable.

Beck Arnley shows # 077-0011 but there about$20 each

best case is to call a rebuilder. Pistons as well as rebuild kits for masters, w.c.'s anc calipers for road cars are a lost art and thus not stocked by parts stores.

Sorry Jerry,

But I'll respectfully disagree. You can still find many LBC parts at the mainstream stores if you know where to look and what specfically your looking for. Often the problem is the pimple faced clerk who only knows Hondas, how to look up parts by the number or the difference in MG or GM.

John:

I love it, if you come into the city and ask for a 1/4" brake line, they look like a puss bomb is about to pop.

Last time I did so, he told me it was okay to go behind the counter. I found a whole rack of them (diff sizes lenghts - Bendix) and he said dat is what dos are an scratched his head? What dos they do?

Think their maybe some geographic relationship as well.

Respectfully,
Pat
