C-5 Galaxy

No, not a Ford Galaxy. A Lockeed Galaxy.

I was driving down to visit my Dad today. He lives just down the street from Lakehurst Naval Air Station (which is now really a Joint Base along with Dix and McGuire).

Anyway, I saw this C-5 on final and I just managed to get the camera up against the windshield as it went by. This is a very, very large airplane.

During Desert Storm, those things took off from Altus all the time. The run way there ends about 100 feet from the highway going into town so on a weekend when I had nothing to do I'd drive over there and park on the shoulder watching them take off right over me. A really amazing sight.

I need to get my video camera for a movie of these guys. They fly right over my Dad's house on final and they are an amazing site.

When I was a kid, living in the same area, we'd see the Navy blimps all the time.

And during the Viet Nam war, we'd see C-119s (Flying Boxcars) flying over our house all day long as they left McGuire AFB. Recently, I met an elderly guy who flew those things out of McGuire during that time.

Here's another thing I saw at Lakehurst the other day....we still have plenty of FEMA people in NJ working on the Hurrucane Sandy cleanup and many are based at Lakehurst.
(the permanent street sign it's leaning on is a warning for low flying jets).

That would have been amazing to see the blimps out and about back in the day. I envy you.

My older son, though trained to fly KC-135s, did have an opportunity while at Altus to take the controls of a C-5. He said it was like flying a large building!

I love the sound those engines make. Now imagine watching that monster run right at you and shoot up into the air over your head. Good ear protection is recommended.
