C-130 Crash

This modified C-130 was designed specifically to attempt to land on a soccer field and rescue American hostages held in Iran. A very good friend of mine, Cecil, was a Major at the time and was the flight test engineer on this then Top Secret project. He was on board in this crash.

 
Did a TDY photo shoot in Texas (Randolph AFB, IIRC) of a 130 using JATO packs. THAT was frightening enough! The idea of using all that thrust to STOP a Herk may have looked great on paper... :scared:

Glad there were no serious injuries in that mess!
 
I bet that was a hairy ride. Better that it happened during training than during the actual mission, that would have been an absolute disaster.
 
That rescue mission was a disaster in any event.
