What happened when you tried the built-in method?

Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7

all I ended up with was an apparent endless loop of start up process, black screen, start up process, black screen.
but in Bill's defense, I'm the accidental Ralph Nadar of computer fault testing.

my machine was about 7 yrs old. I should have left well enough alone.
 
Well ... sounds like it's not quite that bad.

Almost seems logical, that MS can't be expected to re-tool 7 and 8 for every new processor that might be developed.

Edit: Come to think of it, I supposed processor designers can't be expected to design processors to run on all older cpu's.
 
Well it finally happened. My new laptop went haywire. Windows 10. Startup menu doesn't work, left click doesn't work, etc. I have no idea what to do other than take it in to a repair shop down here in Florida. Any suggestions from someone tech savvy?
 
Well, if it's "not responding" to mouse clicks or touchpad - it could be hardware.

If it's running, what happens when you hit the Windows key plus the X key? A menu should pop up.

If it's totally frozen, push in the power button for about ten seconds, and the computer should shut down completely. Then hit the power button again and watch the system power up, and see what happens as Windows starts up.

What part of Florida?
 
We're in Venice.
No usual startup screen, no menu, no way to access Microsoft Solitaire for example and the only way to shut it off or start is with the button.It goes on and off instantly instead of the usual 10 or 20-second startup and shutdown. Also can't access PDF or JPEG files. Just get a red X and a message. Google works fine.Just click on icon. Mouse and add-on keyboard work fine. I installed Avast last week and added an HP separate keyboard the other day because we hated the laptop keyboard but everything seemed ok until it went haywire. I can get to my documents but only after a roundabout route. I need this thing for my business...And they want computers to drive cars?
 
OK - first thought. Uninstall the external HP keyboard. Then shut the computer completely off, and turn back on.

I *think* you're going into sleep/hibernate, if it "shuts down" instantly.
