Buying new desktop computer... Which Windows OS?

Quick thinking here, I am planning to purchase a new desktop computer this week, custom made for photo editing and the big files I generate...

My biggest concern are my printer and scanner, both older but high quality... I can purchase anything from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and still have current drivers for both of them... Any thoughts from anyone on here? I may go as early as tonight to the store, it's a "proper" computer store, called Memory Express if anyone knows it... And they do build systems, not just out of box stuff...

My current desktop? Don't ask, okay... About an eight year old computer running XP Pro, I probably should have replaced it three years ago... My internet constantly crashes, runs slow... Ditto Photoshop...

That's a tough call.
but if hardware is equal I would go with 7.
(actually I would go with Apple if all else is compatibile)
my lap top is 8 & I don't like it. 8 is not intuitive for me.
7 was my desk top & worked well ( I just updated to 10 & am not sure why I did), besides you may be able to upgrade to 10 free of charge later.
having said all that : I am strictly a user. Not a software guy.

I develop commercial software & we have computers here with Windows XP, 7, and 10. We've dropped 8 completely and XP is obviously past its sell-by date. We need the various releases for testing. For actual ~work~, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit is our only reliable tool. Win 10 will probably mature, but I think it's still a half baked system that was released too early. I suggest going with 7 - you can always go to 10 in the future.

Thanks for the thoughts... The sales guy a few weeks also suggested Windows 7, just wanted to make sure beyond just his opinion...

Are your printers special in some way? (As in, large format printers that can print posters.) If not, new printers cost about $15-20 more than buying the refill ink cartridges, and they come with a new set of cartridges included. If you are filling your ink cartridges manually, stick with what you've got because the new ones can track your usage and prevent you from using anything but the recommended (and crazily overpriced) ink they want you to buy. Sorry I cannot help otherwise, but I don't do Windows.

It's a large semi-pro printer... Anyway, just back from the store, I've got a new computer for $1K  Will probably get it back home by the end of the week... Now does anyone know where they hide Firefox bookmarks? I have lots of them to transfer over to the new computer...

Check Mozilla's site to find the file. There are directions to find the name of the bookmark file because it is unique to your computer.

I work for a major utility. We have Win 7 Pro on our laptops. Utilities won't change until the new system is proven. They're not changing.

Bought an Imac a month before Christmas. Love it and don't miss the old pc.

I know from nothing. Bought a laptop and a desktop - both with Windows 10. No problems so far & everything compatable without "upgrades".

BINGO!

I'm having to perform 'remediation' on boxes with Win8/8.1 after feckless purchases by clients who thought they were making savvy business decisions by buying new computers. Bah! And Win10 has yet to hit its stride with TWAIN drivers. Some scanners are totally ignored by it, some niche warez we come across (PaperPort, specifically) seem to be well behind the 10 curve.

I've run across that with Canon scanners when Win7 was new. Canon didn't want to spend the money to write drivers for older scanners. They would sell me a new scanner that would work with Win7 though. I can't lay all the blame at the feet of Microsoft in this case.

Just a follow up FYI:

after upgrading to windows 10 (from 7) & finding some compatibility problems with my office software, I made the belated decision to go back to Windows 7.......but it ain't that easy. I couldn't figure out how to do it and apparently caused a major FUBAR, so I took it into the guy who maintains my systems. He can't do it either, but now it's really half baked & crashing on boot up. I wish I was never snared by those constant Windows 10 prompts.
i think the take home is: if you upgrade to 10, you can't go back.

What happened when you tried the built-in method?

Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7

*tapity, tap*

They couldn't finish the computer build by today (Friday, weekend, when I have tons of spare time), looks like I get to pick it up on Monday, the start of a work week, when life gets busier with stuff... I probably won't be able to open the box until mid-week... I can be impatient sometimes... Also want to get rid of my old "dinosaur" ASAP... *sigh*

"Good things are worth waiting for!" (cliche' of the moment)

So what OS did you decide on? 7? 8? 10?
