Buying in another state

This has been a learning experience for me. I am in FL and I bought a '71 0r '72 Spitfire in GA and received a Bill of Sale. Tag office in FL says they need a registration from the buyer which he doesn't have because he bought it from someone in TN 5 or 6 years ago and never had it titled. The bill of sale says 1972. For the seller to get it titled (so he can sign it to me), a GA form must be filled out by a police officer (I was told a FL police officer would be ok) proving that the VIN was indeed on that car. Well, the officer ran the number and it came back owned by someone in TN and as a 1971, not 1972. So, I am sending the VIN form back to the seller who will take it to his tag agency to get it registered and requesting different Bill of Sales reflecting a 1971 car. My question is: Can anyone tell me from the Commission number what year this car really is? FK33128U. And the moral of this story is "check with your local tag office for what you need when you buy a car out of state". I realize that you old salts know that, but it may help someone new like me. At least I have a very nice seller who is willing to help in any way he can.....Bob

Mickey, I looked at that site (thanks), but either I am reading the chart wrong or my number just isn't there. MY number is FK33128 U.

I agree that number would be a 1972 "Federal" model. Actually, US versions of MkIV Spitfires are pretty easy to identify by year. There were only two model years of them. 1971s would've had the FK prefix and an "L" suffix letter, while 1972 had the same FK prefix and a "U" (for United States) suffix.

As I recall, your "VIN" plate, found on the driver's side "B" post, should have some indication of a month/year build date on it. What does that say?

A relatively useful source of such information -- and a good place to "register" your car as well -- is Joe Curry's International Triumph Spitfire Database, found at <https://members.cox.net/spitlist/MkIV.htm> (this URL is specifically for the MkIV models; drop the ".MkIV.htm" to go to the home page).
