okay let's try this again..i'm looking at these old chrome bumpers and thinking they might be a little too beat up to rechrom. VB sells replacements for, what i believe, are probably going to be around the same cost to rework and rechrome. these bumpers have dings and bends that have to be removed. does anyone have any past experience or recent experience with replacing these or having them rechromed? is there any reason to believe the quality of the replacement bumpers would opt you to get the original ones redone? anyone got a round estimate to rechron one of these? thanks

FWIW: I had the MGB front one rechromed, got the VB rear as replacement... the car has not been on the road yet and I put a cover over it when not working on it. The rear one is already showing small pits. I will have the rear one (original) rechromed. Cost will be approximately equal to the (s)crap from VB.

thanks ... some how i figured a rechrome might be better than purchasing a new one. my concern is the bends and dings. for me, they are not easy to remove.

A competent chrome shop should be able to straighten out the metal before dipping it.

i like hearing that ... i tried initially and decided i would make it worse if i continued.

Check your PM icon.

Yup, trying to straighten metal (if you do not know what you are doing) can make it worse by stretching areas that do not need to be stretched. They should be able to remove all dings and bends (but they may have to do a little cutting and welding if they are too bad.)

they are not that bad but have been hit previously and as many sprite owners know, these babies don't take hits very well.

A good chrome shop, can fix darn near anything. It is amazing what they do.

that's good to hear ... i will do some more research on this and get back to everyone. i have some other chrome issues i need to address. i can't put old chrome back on a new body.

Fred, yer real lucky!! Spritenut (and myself) have used Paul's Chrome Plating in Penn,!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
