bumper alterations/soft top problems

All tops are nto created equally for all MGBS!!! I found that out when I bought a top on Ebay from someone who didn't have any idea what year B it was on...and even though I heated it with a quartz heater, it still won't fit my 74. The screwholes in the header we still capped, so I assume it was on a stick frame (pre '70)before and are just alittle bit shorter than the post '70 models. I hope you all learn from my mistake! LOL

SO, I now have two tops for my car...one is old and tatered and the other one is too small...if anyone wants a top cheap, let me know!

I've got one of the later-model "Michelotti" frames, and even when I fold it up correctly, it does stick up a bit when rolled. The tonneau cover does not fit over it perfectly flat at the rear. You say yours sticks up 2-3 inches, and I'd guess mine might stick up that much too sometimes

I would hazard a guess that it also depends on the material used. The originals used one grade of Vinyl, and now there are several different types being used. My white top is a little heavier than some of the black "stock" tops I've seen. Even so, if you're careful with it you can roll it up nicely enough that with the tonneau frame in place the tonneau just rests over the top and makes a nearly flat surface. I'm also pretty careful about pushing all the wrinkles out of the top as the frame is folding (not just the window area).

Actually, I hadn't even thought of the difference in material thickness. You may have hit upon something there. The new top has to be at least twice as thick as my tonneau cover, and also that of the small cover for putting over the soft top. That would account for it sticking up, now if I could only master rolling/folding/even beating it into submission so it would roll and store easy
