Bummer Of A Day

Tried the new keys and they're really rough going in. They will only turn the lock when one side is up. I almost had a deja vu experience when one of the keys twisted on me! They'll turn the lock to the run position (fuel pump ticks away) but turning to the start position does nothing.

I hate to do it, but I'm ordering a replacement switch and lock assembly. I don't trust this one at all now. Do most people drill the tops off the shear pins?

The good news...I received my first parts order today. I'll have a few things to keep me occupied while a wait on the replacement switch.

Something odd happened that I failed to report. I turned the switch to the run position and the fuel pump ticked away. I turned the fan switch on and the fan works. When I turn the key to the start position the fan motor cuts out. I'm also noticing the tach needle bounces ever so slightly when returning from the start position to run.

Wow, and some guess that is. I'm impressed.

Now waiting to find out what it is.

Two ataboys for that one.

Not my week. Just not my week. I found my parts shipment left by the delivery person at the garage door in the rain...next to the gutter spout. They couldn't walk 5 steps more to put it under the porch. Amazing.

Replacement switch won't fit. It has the wrong multi port plastic connector. Mine is a 5 port, this has 7. Guess I'll be taking a drive toward Decatur to see if they have the correct switch. I certainly hope they do.

Found out today that the fan is on what's considered the accessory circuit. When they key is in the start position all accessories should loose power. So what my fan was doing the other night was normal.

Also found the source of my oil leak. It's at the engine end of my braided oil pressure line. There's a hole in the nut on the connection which I guess has some kind of check valve in it. When the motor stops turning oil shoots out of the hole, and I mean a lot of it too.

I hope tomorrow my luck changes for the better and I can find the right switch, and get going in the right direction.

Sounds like your luck is good. You found the leak.

Yes, Jack I guess you're right. If I hadn't of found the leak I would've run out of oil a couple of miles down the road. It leaks like someone cut a main artery. So I'll need to get that taken care of soon.

The 2nd replacement switch didn't work either. My car must have been quite a hodge-podge of weird stuff. There's supposedly only two types of switches, one with the 7 port plastic connector, and ones with the separate wires with bullet connectors. Mine falls into neither category. I've managed to modify the 1st replacement plug end. Turns out it houses some gray wire that's not in mine at all. I had to hack saw the bottom of the plug to make it a 5 port. I just put it on the car and it does work, cranking the engine over as it should.

Now comes the fun part of trying to get those shear bolts to turn. I can hardly wait.

Wound up taking the entire dash off to get clear access to those blasted shear pins. I had to use a larger diameter and thicker cutoff wheel for my Dremel so I could get a stubby screwdriver in there. Switch is now installed and works as it should. I also installed the speedometer cable and the wiper stalk switch.

Excellent work, progress is fun isn't it?

You are now qualified and expected to help the next poor sole with this job.
