Bugeye steering wheel removal

Fun time shopping at Sears on Friday, now I've got a few more tools handy (and an extra set to put in the Tunebug). I picked up the socket for the steering wheel nut. I'm assuming I need to remove the little brass sprung plunger-like object that the horn push connects to -- shown in the top of the wheel center in the attached picture.

Does this just unscrew? It looks like you can't get the wheel nut to turn until this bit is removed.

Thanks, Ray. I admit, I hadn't even tried that.

I was prepared for all sorts of trouble pulling the steering wheel off, days of PB blaster, that sort of thing. Nut came off easily, and the wheel just pulled straight off. Looks like a PO greased the splines with something. Took no effort at all.

Let's hear it for smart POs! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

No lock or what ever it is called.

you get your new wheel Drew.

Drew,

I think you experienced the same doubt that seemed to afflict ncbugeye's PO - at least that is my assumption. When she arrived in my life she had a scruffy old steering wheel, but there, in the several boxes of spare parts, was a brand new one still in its original BMC box, never been used - a box easily 35 to 40 years old. Bear in mind ncbugeye's PO owned her for 31 years. He must have thought that he needed a tool to pull the steering wheel, and just never got around to attempting the switch. It took me less than 5 minutes to install the new wheel the second day I had her. Fortunately I had the right socket already...

No new wheel yet, Jack. I needed to take off the dash to get to one of the captive nuts for the center mirror.

I've got the right socket now, and I'll be ready when my new steering wheel comes in -- whenever that is. Custom work takes a while, so I'm trying hard to be patient.

I'm getting better at diving in and figuring this stuff out. I've had a few frustrations, but so far have been able to solve all the problems eventually. Sometimes I think these little cars are so glad to be loved again, that they do what they can to be helpful. Silly, I know, but that's the way I am.

I'd agree. Some judicious knobbling and TLC will return a car you can enjoy and count on to go "there and back" every time. They seem to appreciate doting. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Nay Doc. They don't appreciate doting, they DEMAND doting, hehehe!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Don't forget the just plain love. Look at us we got to be nuts.

I'm probably too late on this but I made a puller for the wheel on my midget. I found a piece of 1/4 inch plate about 4"X4" and took that little locking ring tab thing as a pattern and drilled 6 holes and then took the wheel nut loose and screwed it back on a little and then put the plate on with the 6 wheel bolts and tightened the bolts up and tapped on the center of the plate with a hammer and it came right off. I never could find a puller that fit exactly right, most only used 3 bolts and I did't want to pull the aluminum threads out.

Well done, you may have the only purpose made steering wheel puller in exhistance.

It matches the other special purpose spridget tools that I have. Its what happens when a maintenance person has access to a machine shop at work on a slow night shift /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Do you chrome plate them or are they made of special stainless steel?

No chome, some stuff however is stainless. Stainless scraps are available at times to make things with. I really haven't made that many tools for the spridget. The wheel puller, a flywheel balancer, jig for setting pinion depth, thats all I can think of for now. Made many parts that were too high, or were not tough enough for what I thought they out to be. Hey, I made that cross over pipe below the radiator out of hard copper tubbing and some fittings sweated on and opened up some big wire terminal clips and soldered them on for mounts.

You got my vote.

I've got an aftermarket wooden wheel on my car, but an original wheel among my spare parts. I'd like to put the original wheel on, but it needs some sprucing up.

Can anyone recommend how to paint the old wheel to look somewhat new?
