Bugeye Side Curtain Mystery

Gentlemen:

I continue the resto on my 1960 BE. This week I began working on sprucing up the side curtains. I removed the rubber gaskets and attaching brackets, polished the metal and refurbed the plastic.

I have to order new rubber gaskets from VB or Moss, but just to see how the brackets would hold in place, I put the windows on the door. That's when I spotted what could be a problem:

- The driver's side frame goes right up against the windshield post when the door is closed. That means that once the rubber gaskets are on the frame is going to be a really tight squeeze in this area. Meanwhile, the passenger door window frame seems to allow enough of a gap that will be filled quite comfortably by the new gaskets.

I measured both window frames and found they are identical. They both are attached by the thumbscrews, which are in their proper spots on the doors. Their mounting brackets are in the same spots and I found that the back ends of the windows reach to the very back of the doors so the roof should fit securely.

The doors shut correctly and the windshield seems to be positioned correctly, so where is the geometry wrong on the car?

Could the frame be out of square? well I know its not square but maybe it was drop on an edge or something throwing of the angle of the frame. That would push the leading edge more upright making it closer to the windsheild. You could stack them on each other and see the differance it that is the case.

I should think, only think now.

That I would try differing combinations of the part that hooks the frame to the door. They are bendable and may not be all the same. In any case maybe several can be bent to make it fit correctly.

Mike -

It got bent over the years. I just had the same issue and consulted a restored BE and said it jsut needed a slight bend to put into proper allignemnt.

Ahh yes, compare the two sides to see if one is bent somehow.
