Bugeye Seats

Does anyone have any pictures of installed seats on a Bugeye? I need to see how the seat frame is attached to the seat base and runners. If not pictures, then perhaps a good description? Thanks.

Bob,
The seat base just sits in the base frame. There are 3 fingers that the rear of the seat base frame that the seat base slides under. The upper rails are bolted to the seat base frame and the lower rails fit into the upper rails. Under the lower rails there needs to be a wood 'packing' strip. The lower rail(s) is bolted through the packing strip, then the floor, with the nuts on the bottom. Any pictures wouldn't show much as we are talking about a small space. The inner base rails (those nearest the tranny tunnel have their mounting holes located in the center of the 'U' shaped brace on the bottom of the floor board pan. If you have a M##s catalog look at the illustration of the seat hardware shown. That might give you a better idea of how the parts go together. If the seats are not going to be adjustable (front to back) the 'packing strips can be left out. They are there so that the front of the seat will clear the crossmember when slid forward. I have spacers at the front mounts and have the rear sitting on the floor to tilt the seat back and a little lower for a better driving position.

Thanks for the clear and complete description. I now see that, while I have the seat base frame, the seat base, and the lower rails, I am lacking the upper rails and the wood 'packing' strip. Moss motors indicates that the parts I'm missing are unavailable. I've looked at Victoria British and Austin Healey Spares to no avail. Any idea where I can find these needed parts?

Bob,
Unless a fellow lister chimes in with an offer for the upper rails, you will have to look at autojumbles, ebay, for sale ads. The wood packing strips can be made. They were about 1" wide and at the front 1/2" thick tappering to about 1/4" at the rear and just long enough to allow for the front and rear bolts to pass through with about a 1/2" pass the bolts. Any hardwood, oak, elm, etc will do. Upper seat rails from a Mk-II Sprite or a Mk-I Midget will work with the Bugeye seats as they were the same.
