1. I'm re-building a spare master cylinder to trade out for the one in the car. While it's on the bench I'm going to put it back to original. Was it unpainted when new?
2. The manual shows a picture that includes "boots". The parts books do not offer "boots". What am I missing here?
 
yes, unpainted, I buffed mine and clearcoated. Do you have a picture of these boots? Not sure which you mean
 
From the looks of it (information in AKD book’s) the boots are the rubber bits that fit on the front alumn plate (boot plate). They are what seal the front shafts entering into the master cyl. They may not be listed separately from the rebuild kit for the master cylinder.
Another option to a protective coating is to paint it in a cast iron gray color. Cast blast by Seymour paints is a good choice. Like any other coating (paint wise) one spill will remove most anything.

The "boots" I'm seeing in the Clymer manuel are segmented and 2 or 3 inches long. Would those perhaps be for an MG? Or a later model sprite. Sometimes it gets confusing when they try to include several different models or cars in each repair section of the manual. At any rate I appreciate your answers. Thanks for the help.

If you’re using the later Clymer’s manual, covering 1958-1979, chapter 11 page 195 as the example, turn back to chapter 9 page top of page 160 for a good view of the year model your dealing with. If you have the 1958-1977 manual it’s still the same chapters only pages 185 and 150. Very both show good exploded views of all the styles. Does that help?

O.K. Now I'm looking at the Kenneth Ball 1970 manual and on pg 63 is the same picture as in the Clymer manual. The part in question is the expandable boot. The Lenexa Vic catalog doesn't show it. Is it just no longer available, maybe they don't stock it, or should I look for a different source?

p.s. There are references to boot clips (2) and a boot fixing plate.
