Sorry for stupid questions, but how do you get the heat turned on? Which way does the valve go on the engine?

it's just a tap, clockwise off, unless it' buggered.
You will still get a log of heat through the tunnel from general engine heat, which may lead you to believe the heaters still on.
 
Do you have the trap doors in the footwells open?

Getting nippy out there?
As the valve opens the thing gets taller.
Just like a spigot on the garden hose.
In to close, out to open.
 
Just to continue the thread to the inside of the car....The heater knob, marked "H" controls the flapper valve at the inlet to the heater core. It is supposed to work as follows, push it in allows heat into the car, pull it out to close the flapper valve. When the flapper valve is open, turning the knob to the right turns on the squirrels and they produce heat. Why did the designers put a vent on the front? Too costly I guess.

I dunno....I'm a bit north of Kevin, and it was 82 on the back deck today.
 
Really, in is heat. I got to remember to look in the morning.

I just use the flapper valves inside, oh yea, never have a passenger so easy.
