BugEye Glass Windscreen

My '61 BugEye is in very good condition except for a small crack in the glass Windscreen. I have ordered a new glass and would appreciate any information regarding the removal and installation of the new glass. Is it difficult to insert the new glass in the frame? Does heating the frame help? Thanks for any info that will help with my installation.

IMO
You should replace all the rubber seal parts.
Have no preconceived amount of time of how long its going to take.
Check here there are some threads on the subject of different techniques
Don’t try and rush it.
Buy some Advil your going to need it for you sore fingers and headache
Don’t try this in a cold garage the rubber will be the consistency of a truck tire it won’t go
Check back here every hour or two for moral support

I seem to remember a trick I saw somewhere about putting a string into the slot before the glass goes in. As the glass is placed into the slot to start the installation, the end of the string is positioned at the point where the glass will no longer go in without pulling the edge of the rubber over the glass. Begin to pull the string, causing the rubber to open and the glass to go into the slot. This will require 2 or 3 pairs of hands to hold and press the glass while holding and pulling the string but should save scratched glass and sore digits.

A 6 Pack or donuts for your local Auto Glass Installer just might do the trick. This might be one of those, wish I would a things that is not worth the frustration.

I doubt you will find an installer willing to attempt it. If it cant be siliconed in to place they dont seem to want the work to hard and time consuming and most are so young they never saw a windsheild stuffed in like this in the first place. Most where still in diapers when the last cars with flange windshield glass was the norm.

Thank God my local glass shop is a one man owned shop, sure he glues in all the new stuff but he loves the old school stuff too.
Some refreshments and a Bugeye windshield on a Saturday, and he does it.
He complains alot about the cheap "bootleg" rubber but he still does it.
He did the Holy Sprite windshield for us and in a few weeks will be doing my latest project Bugeye glass.
I think he only charged me once to do an LBC windshield and that was only $50.
I bring him 1 or 2 a year.
The key words here are local & family owned. You get results from a local business man in your town. Chain stores don't give a snot about you.
Give the local guy cash, give the chain a credit card.
