Hello,
I am getting close to finally installing my engine and transmission. A couple of questions:1) Is it easier to attach the transmission to the engine first and install both together as a unit? ( The bonnet is off at the moment.) 2) On the engine mounts, does one normally install the metal brackets to the frame and bolt the rubber mount to engine and then guide the rubber mounts to the metal brackets as I lower the engine into the engine bay? I have never done this before, so any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

1. Yes
I believe most people do it this way. Much easier with two people though - however Jack Laird can no doubt give you plenty of pointers on how to accomplish this single handed.

2. I put the mounts on the frame then lower then engine onto them.
 
I mount the driver's side steel motor mount to the car first (it goes under the steering column) and the off side steel mount to the engine. This way the driver's side doesn't have to go around the steering column and the other side drops straight in.

Bill M. has it down. Racers slot the mounts.
 
What BillM said, and I keep the mounts loose while putting the engine in so you have more wiggle room when aligning everything.

I want to make sure I understand. I should bolt both of the rubber mounts to the engine. I bolt the metal bracket to the driver side, but bolt the steel mount to the passenger side rubber mount? I don't have the steering column in at the moment. Would I be better off to leave it out until the engine is in?

if my square body is anything to go by, leave the steering column out.
 
Weee, if column is out put the engine in first, much easier.

Yep, it can be done easly by your self if you have a lift.
 
Thanks for the advice. I will just leave it out for now. I still have to finish painting the steering wheel and surround if it ever stops raining here anyway. Now that you know the steering column is still out, would you bolt the steel mounts to the frame on both sides, bolt the rubber mounts to the engine, and lower it onto the steet mounts?

Bolt to engine loosly, then lower away, wait to do that when the tranny and the engine is mostly in.
