Bugeye caliper piston orientation?

The caliper pistons on my Bugeye have part of their front edges ground off. According to the Haynes manual, they are supposed to be oriented in the caliper the way they came out, but Haynes doesn't elaborate further. Unfortunately for me, I did not notice the orientation when I removed the pistons. I can see that the back of the old pads show that the ground off parts were positioned side to side in the caliper. Since the pads are now all mixed up, I can't tell which way (fore or aft) to locate the ground down part of the piston in the caliper.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!

According to Bentley, the cutout is positioned downwards. Illustration on page M.11 of the 1275 Sprite/Midget book, page M.12 of the 948/1098 book.

However, replacement pistons don't even <u>have</u> the cutout in them.

Thanks for the info. FYI, my new pistons came from VB and do have the cutout. I was expecting the new pistons to have the typical chrome finish, but these have a black anodized finish. A mechanic friend of mine assured me they would work just fine.
 
Hmmmm........... The last three or four sets I've gotten weren't cut out. VB must have changed suppliers. Good to know. Thanks for the info, but I'm curious about the finish.
I think the next time I need a set, I'll make my own from stainless.
