Bugeye Bonnet Installation Update

Took my first trial fit at mounting the Bugeye Bonnet with front tilt setup. Discovered that a Bugeye Bonnet can balance quite easily using the fender mirror mounting holes rigged up with eyebolts and a rope suspended from a pulley up at the ceiling level. Made it into a one person job to move around and trial fit. Not something for after finish and paint is done but at this stage worked quite well.

Discovered that my oil cooler mounted between the radiator uprights down at the bottom will interfere with the bonnet unless I trim the mounting ears on the bracket and that oil cooler hoses will need to run up and over the top of the radiator shroud for clearance.

Anyone got a picture of an oil cooler mounting between the radiator uprights and oil cooler hose routing when used with a Bugeye bonnet. I got a shot of a vertical mounting alongside the radiator upright but that doen't look to be the most efficient way to get the oil cooler out in the airflow.

My plan is to trim the ears off of the large |______| U shaped oil cooler bracket, mount by only 1 hole on each side, and tilt back at a 30-40 degree angle and see if I can get clearance to get the bonnet snugged up and closed. Time for more engineering cogitation.

Re: Bugeye Bonnet Installation Update

Sounds like good progress, Jim. Watch the clearance above the radiator through the light holes. I only have about 1/4" on mine.

Re: Bugeye Bonnet Installation Update

Barry,

Thanks haven't gotten that close yet. Oil Cooler Mounting bracket sticks out too far and there are clearance issues. Will need to modify the bracket to make it fit and once again reroute the oil cooler hoses. Glad I never made a permanent rerunning of those hoses as the route I wanted to take won't work. Tolerances under there are far closer than I could ever imagine.

So far things are looking good and the ability to suspend the entire bonnet from the ceiling by myself for fitting and positioning is a plus. No way was I going to get Colleen to come down to the garage and help out on this one. Perhaps for the final fit and assembly after paint but not now.

I'll try to get back to it tonight and see if I can reshape the bracket, trim off the mounting ears, etc. Gotta keep plugging away. Temps this coming weekend are supposed to be too cold to get out in the garage. Ten weeks until Spring!!!
