Budget for rebulding a 1275

Assuming I do the work (will be a first) and that the core is solid (head, block etc are all ok) what should budget for machining and parts?

I know the machining will vary a great deal by location and the exact work done, but I'm looking for a working budget only at this point.

What do you think guys?

Thanks,

Tom

Whatever budget you come up with add another 50% to it! That's why I don't do budgets when I start a car...

I took my engine in with pistons still installed, plus the head. they finished disassembling (don't let them do this as they won't keep everything in order the way you will)

they measured everything, boiled block and honed everything for $250.

go through Moss for the bearings rings etc prices and you will be reasonably close I suspect. (then order from Tony and get a good price)

So many vairables, can you use the old pistons, rods, crank, cam.

If all those are reuseable plan on a grand to to a bang up job.

OK, I'll talk about a highend build to give you a idea on the upper level.
Fiquire really good parts, tri metal bearings, chilled iron lifter, APT cam, vernier timing gear set, AE21253 piston, that going to run you about $1500 in parts.

Macining cost are differnt all over the country, I hear maching cost in California and cringe, around here, vat a block, bore it, grind a crankshaft, fiquire about $500 around hear, probably more in your neck of the woods.

Fiquire to renw your head, if you get new valves, install hardened exhaust seats
(you really, really need to do this)springs, guides, and have someone do a valve job, fiquire agin you're goign to spend about $500

The best avice I can give you is that the perfomance of your engine will give alot of service if you rebuild it properly, and can very easily end someoen's love with this hobby if the low rad is taken. Remember doing it right the first time is always cheaper than doing it twice.

Hap, I'm about to start budgeting a build up of my engine. There is a local machine shop that is very experienced in old british iron, but not necessarily for performance engines. They seem quite content to use Moss as the primary supplier of parts. Other than APT (nothing against them, but I want more options), where can I source decent bearings, and pistons, and lifters.

I'm in Socal as well. My 1275 rebuild is costing me about $1500.00 total. That includes overboring, line bore of the crank journals, boil the block (and magnafuxing block and head) balancing (a MUST!) gaskets, new pistons, bearings, timing gears, oil pump, Kent Cam and lifters and I'm sure other stuff I'm not thinking of right now. Of course, I did this two years ago so add for inflation. I'm providing my own labor, this being the 6th or 7th rebuild including a couple I did for friends. Follow the directions and keep everything clean to the point of being sterile!
If you can reuse your pistons, oil pump, cam etc. then you are probably looking at around $850.00 although you can save a few hundred by not balancing the assembly and I STRONGLY urge to balance the engine. Let me know if you would like some on the spot assistance (as long as you're not too far away from Highland Park (near Pasadena). It's great feeling when you fire up the engine you rebuild yourself, so go for it!
Roy
