is it necc to use the gasket under the thermostat if not using the bellows style? i have always just dropped a regular thermostat right in to the recessed area on other cars. i did not use it on mine but i have one so thought maybe i should ask before going forward.

I've done the same many times. The little gasket that goes below the T-stat is a bit of a joke when you consider how the seating surface for that gasket is usually corroded and could not possibly seal anything.
