BT7 Steering Box - Tube connection

Hello @ all,
I would like to ask the specialists about the connection between the outer tube and the housing of the steering box. Is it a pressfit connection ?
In my case it is a light snug fit of the tube outer diameter, to the muff of the steering box housing.
Currently without sealing at this connection because of the easy movement.
How it should be sealed ?

Thank you very much in advance for your advices.

Michel who is currently in world soccer fever..:excitement:

I've always thought/believed/speculated/etc. that the tube and box were soldered together, but I could be wrong. Since soldering wouldn't be a particularly strong joint, I figured it was a loose press fit, and the solder was there mostly to seal the joint (like fitting copper piping).

I recently rebuilt a steering box while converting it from a LHD to RHD. I was told buy a well respected restoration company in Australia (100S fame) that the tube to casting fit was silver soldered together. So after heating the area the two parts separated with little force. I then silver soldered the tube into new RHD casting and reassembled the steering box. I understand silver solder is stronger than just plain solder and is what plumbers use for copper pipe connections.

Hello ,

thank you for your information.
This makes definitly sense, but this is not easy to realise if the the housing is not really free of grease or oil contamination.
But I'm happy that you all understand my explanation in my question because of my german accent...

Bye Michel- who will fix it with silver soldering
