BT7 Distributer rebuild

I sent off an old dist I had in the basement to have it rebuilt by one of the regulars re builders. It came back beautiful. When I went to drop the rebuilt one into the car the rotor is 180 degrees off from the old one.

Is it possible to install the driver dog (as Moss Motors calls it) 180 degrees off?

If not, then what else can be wrong.

I have an email into the rebuilder so I could hear back in a day or two. Just hoping one of you would know quicker.

Thanks Scott

Yes, the lower drive dog that has the gear that meshes with the camshaft could easily be off. Bring #1 up to top dead centre on the firing stroke and set the lower drive dog slot to the twenty-to-two position as per the workshop manual. Then engage the distributor and make sure the rotor is facing the number one stud in the distributor cap.

Well Rich, that would work if the driving dog on the dizzy was installed correct.
However, if the driving dog on the dizzy has been positioned 180Degree out
Then the dizzy driving slot in the engine will require repositioning to a different[ 20 - to - 2] position from that shown in the manual thus permitting the rotor to point at the # 1 stud in the dizzy cap.----Keoke

I did not hear back from the re builder today like I hoped. Is the driving dog even able to be installed off? Or is the pin off set? I cannot tell from looking at it.

IS wire #1 pointing toward the the edge of the vacume advance? If so, then the dist (non rebuilt) one is correct and the rebuilt one is wrong.

Thanks Scott

I know its old school, but why not pick up the phone and call the rebuilder?

Yes the driving dog can be installed 180 Degrees out because the tang on the bottom of it is offset.I cannot tell from looking at it.

LOOK at it closely you will see the tang is not centered.

Similarly, the slot in the driving gear located in the engine is also offset to match.Consequently, either one of them can be installed incorrectly.

However, the driving gear in the engine can be very simply repositioned by lifting it up slightly and rotating it as required to accommodate the driving dog position on the distributor.

IS wire #1 pointing toward the the edge of the vacume advance?---NO!! It is located 180 degrees from the location you just defined,

If so, then the dist (non rebuilt) one is correct and the "rebuilt one" is wrong. Maybe not

Thanks Scott

I did call him. Left a message, my cell number, two emails. Good thought however. Some people do not like email too much.

Though bashing businesses on the BCF is somewhat discouraged paying compliments is not! I have always had great service from Jeff Schlemmer at Advanced Distributors, and that includes not only his work but his responsiveness.

I cant't say enough good things about Advanced Distributors and the work Jeff does. He once fixed my race dizzy in 24 hours and had it back to me in time to install it and be on the road for an event in SoCal. He's all I'll ever use.
